Understanding the Differences Between Active and Non-Active Care

The NDIS provides crucial support to participants, and understanding the different types of care is essential for effective planning. A key distinction in the NDIS is between active and non-active care. While these terms may sound similar, they differ significantly in the level of engagement and the nature of the support provided.

Active care involves hands-on, direct assistance that requires a support worker’s continuous involvement. This type of care includes tasks like helping a participant with daily personal activities (e.g., dressing, bathing, or meal preparation) and providing physical or mobility assistance. Person-centred active care is dynamic and often tailored to the participant’s immediate needs, requiring constant attention and responsiveness from the care provider.

On the other hand, non-active care refers to support provided during periods when the participant requires less hands-on assistance. It often involves supervision or being available to respond to needs. Non-active care might include overnight shifts where a support worker is present but is only required to act if the participant needs help. The focus here is on maintaining a safe environment rather than providing continuous, direct support.

Understanding these distinctions is crucial for NDIS participants, families, and providers, and implementing a behaviour support plan is essential in assisting a participant in reaching their goals and aspirations. The appropriate mix of active and non-active care ensures that participants receive the right level of support tailored to their unique needs, improving both care outcomes and resource allocation.
